ABB Oy
ABB and Ericsson partner on 5G-enabled industrial automation, with a joint 5G lab and factory deployments.
Description
ABB and Ericsson have collaborated on research into industrial connectivity since 2015, and at Hannover Messe 2019 signed a Memorandum of Understanding to accelerate flexible wireless automation for factories. The partnership combines ABB's leadership in digital industries and robotics with Ericsson's connectivity expertise to enable connected services, industrial IoT and AI technologies for manufacturing customers.
The two companies operate a joint 5G laboratory in Västerås, Sweden, and have demonstrated the results in practice: ABB provides a fully automated flexible robotics cell that assembles 5G radios at Ericsson's Tallinn facility. In 2020 the collaboration extended to Thailand, where Ericsson became ABB's Preferred Connectivity Partner, with use cases including 5G-enabled augmented reality for remote commissioning and NB-IoT connected motors and drives.
