Connected from day 1 (fiber optional)

When a six-week fiber delay threatened its new Toronto office, BlueStar reached for the same cellular technology it distributes, and was fully operational on day one.

Success story highlights

Challenge

When BlueStar relocated its Toronto office, a last-minute lease collapse restarted the search with almost no runway left. The 10-person team spent a month working from home before keys to the new space arrived, and when they did, fiber internet was still six weeks out.

Solution

BlueStar drew on its own demo equipment pool to deploy Ericsson Cradlepoint cellular routers at the new location and configured the network over a single weekend. The office was fully connected and operational before the team’s first scheduled in-office day.

Benefits

All 10 Toronto employees returned to the office and worked without interruption throughout the six-week wait for fiber, with the network handling between 40 and 50 gigabytes of data on full-office days. Once fiber came online, the cellular solution was transitioned to a permanent network backup, giving the office a layer of resilience it did not have before the move.

Background and challenges

BlueStar, Inc. is a Canadian technology distributor and part of the channel that brings Ericsson Enterprise Wireless Solutions to businesses across the country. In mid-2025, the company set out to relocate its Toronto office, expecting a straightforward move with enough lead time to migrate its network before the opening.

Things did not go as planned. A lease deal collapsed at the last minute, restarting the search and compressing the timeline. By the time a new space was secured, the team had already left the old office, and 10 employees worked from home for a month while furniture sat in storage. When the keys to the new space finally arrived, fiber internet was still six weeks away.

For BlueStar’s Toronto team —which accounts for roughly half of the company’s Canadian business — that gap was more than an inconvenience. Their work runs on connectivity: hundreds of emails a day, order processing, and access to core systems through a virtual private network (VPN). Waiting out the fiber installation from home meant weeks of lost momentum. The team needed to be back in the office and fully operational, and they could not wait two months to get there.

Solutions

BlueStar did not have to look far for an answer. As a distributor of Ericsson Enterprise Wireless Solutions, the team already had the equipment and know-how on hand. Reallocating hardware from BlueStar’s corporate demo pool, managed by a distribution partner, the team deployed cellular routers at the new office,

The setup came together fast. The hardware was provisioned, and the office network configured over a single weekend. By 8 a.m. on the team’s first scheduled in-office day, all 10 employees were online and working. The connection carried the full team’s daily load — between 40 and 50 gigabytes of data — and the router handled an office-wide WAN on its own, since the existing access points were still tied to the migrating corporate network. The team walked into a new office, and everything worked.

“Without this solution, I would have lost six weeks of the collaboration that we were looking for from being in the office.”

Solutions

When fiber service came online six weeks later, BlueStar had no reason to remove what was already working. The cellular hardware stayed in place as a permanent network failover solution, ready to take over automatically if the primary connection ever drops. What began as a stopgap has become a lasting part of the office’s infrastructure.

There is a certain symmetry to how it played out. BlueStar distributes the same category of technology that solved its problem, and the team now knows firsthand how it performs under real conditions, not in a lab or as a demo, but in their own working office, on a deadline that could not move.

Outcomes

Business continuity

All 10 Toronto employees remained in the office and fully operational throughout the six-week wired connectivity gap, with no disruption to daily transactions, email, or system access.

Speed of deployment

From lease signing to a fully connected office took less than one week. The hardware was provisioned and online before the team’s first scheduled in-office day.

Throughput at scale

With all 10 employees simultaneously connected, the network handled 40-50 gigabytes of data per office day, supporting VPN access, email, and high-volume transaction work.

Long-term resilience

Following the fiber installation, the cellular hardware was repurposed as a permanent network failover solution, providing automatic backup connectivity if the primary connection is interrupted.
